Art Center members answered the call for donations and our volunteers worked tirelessly to make our April 13 “Junk-A-Rama” driveway sale a very successful NPAC fundraising effort. NPAC raised slightly more than $1,200 in the five-hour event.

Our sincerest thanks to all of our members who cleaned out their closets, drawers, garages, and yards to donate their unwanted treasures. We were amazed and delighted by the response, not only from our members, but from our community. A steady stream of customers kept our volunteers busy every minute. There was very little left at the end of the day, and the few remaining odds and ends were donated to Goodwill.

Preparing for this kind of event takes a good bit of work, however, and we are also grateful to our volunteers who donated their time sorting, pricing, and packing before the event, and setting up and selling during the day. Sale Chair Carol Dawkins would like to thank all of them for their efforts. Without our volunteers, this would not have been possible.

Again, our thanks to all who volunteered to help: Donna Lane, Sue Shatzer, Karen Frustereo, Barry Thorne, Howard Hartke, Nina Rausch, Denise Manguse, Gail Ribas, Mary Alspaugh, Steve Alspaugh, Chris Sylvester, Brent Sylvester, Mary Maples, Sharon Johnson, Cheryl Srnka, and Steve Miller.

By now you’ve probably heard about Viva Florida, our state’s 500th Anniversary Celebration, marking Ponce de Leon’s arrival on the shores of St. Augustine and the history of Florida that followed.

But there’s another anniversary all of us at NPAC will be celebrating this year as well. It was 25 years ago this November that a small but passionately determined group of local artists met to form the North Port Area Art Guild by electing officers and writing its by-laws. Back then, in 1988, North Port was still just an infant city, a forgotten speck on the Sarasota County map. Think back to 1988–that was the year “The Cosby Show” was the country’s favorite TV program, and George Michael’s “Faith” was Billboard’s number one song. Sometimes it feels like yesterday, sometimes like a lifetime ago, doesn’t it?

Lots has changed since then, and not just in TV or music. North Port today is the largest city in the county and the local art guild isn’t meeting at the library anymore. We’ve both come a long way, baby.

.We’re planning a 25th Anniversary Bash in November to mark this incredible milestone. Who would have thought a quarter-century ago that the Art Guild would have 300 members or its own Art Center, much less a Pottery Studio to boot? It’s a cause for celebration, and we plan to do it up in a big way…stay tuned for more details.

By ANNE KLOCKENKEMPER, Staff Writer

Published: Mar 29, 2013NORTH PORT — After nearly 14 months in the planning, fundraising and creation process, the artwork ‘Mandalas for World Peace’ was officially revealed at the Warm Mineral Springs Day Spa late Wednesday afternoon.Installed March 15, the artwork weighs between 500 and 600 pounds, according to local metal and clay artist John Cheer, who created the piece. A mandala is defined as ‘a graphic and often symbolic pattern, usually in the form of a circle.’ The sculpture consists of 18 3-D clay circle designs, each measuring 12 inches. The artwork seeks to encourage thoughts toward world peace, and possibly attract more national and international tourists to the Springs and its mineral-rich, 87-degree lake. The entire sculpture was executed with Springs water.Along with Cheer, 17 area artists contributed to the piece, including students whose clay circle designs were selected in a contest. Each disc symbolizes each artist’s vision of world peace.

Cheer said it took him three months to finish the work. He hoped he did justice to all the other artists who contributed to the project.

‘This is all about vision, determination and courage,’ he said.

The mandalas project cost a total of $26,631, and NPAC president Mary Alspaugh said the Art Center footed the $1,600 bill to install the sculpture.

Alspaugh said NPAC grants chairwoman Louise Hall, who is also a correspondent for the Sun, was able ‘with persistence and patience and some amount of arm-twisting,’ she said jokingly, to solicit funds from the North Port City Commission, the Sarasota County Commission and the Gulf Coast Community Foundation, along with donations from private donors in the community.

‘World peace seems so ephemeral,’ Alspaugh said, inviting those in the crowd to look closely at the mandalas. ‘Maybe you will find something inspiring in this piece. If so, all the time, money and effort to bring this to fruition will be well spent.’

Hall couldn’t stop smiling at the final unveiling of the mandalas, which she called ‘the largest public artwork ever installed in North Port.’

‘It’s certainly been a learning curve,’ she said of the process.

‘Some time ago, Louise Hall came to me and mentioned ‘Mandalas for World Peace.’ As soon as I heard the name of the thing, I realized it needed to go here,’ said Gene Vaccaro, general manager for Cypress Lending, which operates the Springs. ‘If you’ve ever been here early in the morning or late in the evening, it’s the most peaceful place in the world.’
